AFC Volunteering Opportunities

AFC Opportunities to Help

  • Safety
    • A committee meets regularly, chaired by Augie Rinz. It wrote our aircraft ops manual, recommends currency requirements, creates the annual quiz, and has a general mandate to look at all safety related issues.
  • Aircraft maintenance
    • This is looked after by Brian Appaswamy with help from Duncan Poynton
  • Membership
    • A committee, chaired by Dirk Sieber, interviews new applicants and makes recommendations to the board. And looks after things like the application process, member list etc
  • Newsletter
    • Editor in Chief is Josh Stanford. He assembles the newsletter, but he needs people to contribute, either regularly or ad hoc.
  • Socials and Bar
    • socialCurrently looked after by Chris Palmer and Murray Webb with help from others. Help is always welcomed. One thing we are short of is members with ‘Serving it Right’ certification.
  • Clubhouse maintenance
    • Currently looked after by Keith Wilson, but particular projects (such as recent patio roof) need help from others.
  • Hangar maintenance
    • Currently looked after by Duncan Poynton
  • May Fly-in Wings and Wheels
    • Leading up to the event Ed Boon runs a committee of all those involved. Help is needed in many ways
      • Grading access ramp
      • Filling holes in grassed area
      • Building stage
      • Cooking breakfast
      • Providing music
      • Liaising with other flying clubs and with car clubs
      • Arranging trophies
      • Marshalling aircraft
      • Parking cars and motorcycles
      • Fencing
      • Poster and advertising
    • First Flights For Kids
      • Tdorahelphis is organized by Mark Thibault and Ron Becker. Help is need as follows
        • Volunteer pilots
        • Registration
        • Certificates
        • Aircraft marshalling
        • Escorting kids
        • Fencing
        • Photographs

  • General meeting presentations
    • This past year the whole Board helped to create an initial schedule of speakers for over a year. Actually making the schedule work is the responsibility of the VP. We always need good speakers. The Board and VP shouldn’t be the only ones to come up with ideas, make contact etc.
  • Website
    • Currently looked after by Mark Thibault
  • Audio-Visual
    • The sound system is looked after by Bob MacFarland. Dirk Sieber installed the new projector.
  • TV, Phones and WiFi
    • These were all set up by Devin Campbell
  • AGM Dinner
    • Organised by Bob Bryan
  • Bookkeeping and hangar space
    • Administered by Janet Martens
  • Security
    • Everyone’s responsibility. Doors have been left open, alarms not set, things gone missing too often. The alarm system is looked after by Bevan Thom. Locks and keys for the clubhouse are usually the domain of Larry Runnals.
  • Archives
    • Currently looked after by Millie Watson, but I know she would welcome help from anyone interested. We have 55 years of very inconsistent archives, spread among members, former members, the clubhouse etc.
  • Fly-outs
    • Anyone can initiate a fly-out. The important things are to choose a destination and date, and book an aircraft, and to lead by example – ie actually go. Others will follow – if the weather is ok.
  • Airport liaisonclubliaison
    • Steve Stewart usually attends the airport tenants meetings. And the club is part of the new aerospace cluster.
  • Airshow liaisonThis is partially done by those people we nominate to the airshow board. But we have many other members directly involved in airshow issues.
  • Liaise with other clubs
    • Everyone can do this
  • Clean clubhouse
    • We have a paid service that comes in at fixed intervals, but there is often a need for additional cleaning before and after meetings
  • Aircraft cleaning
    • All our pilots are good at cleaning aircraft after their flights. There is an additional need for periodic more thorough cleaning, particularly underneath the aircraft.
  • Hangar cleaning
    • We do this at least once a year. But more often would be better
  • Update member picture gallery
    • This is a desperate need. I need it in order to have any chance of remembering new names and faces
  • Cut grass
    • Always nice share this, instead of relying on just one person
  • Trim the hedge
    • Needs to be done once a year. It is quite a job
  • Help with Broken Prop’
    • Organised by Bob Bryan and Murray Webb, but much help is needed in food preparation, clean up, serving etc.
  • Airshow
    • There are many volunteer opportunities beyond what the AFC is specifically responsible for.
  • Airshow campground
    • Always need people to help with registration, parking, trash collection, supervision etc. AFC revenue is directly linked to campground performance
  • Airshow static aircraft
    • Currently organized by Courtney Kelly, with help from many volunteers
  • Pool and darts contests
    • Both currently organized by Barb Renkers
  • Aircraft committee
    • This committee will start meeting again in September
  • Good and Welfare
    • Traditionally the responsibility of the VP. But this year looked after by Adrian Renkers
  • boardmeetingThe Board
    • There needs to be a turnover of Board members every year. And the new Directors need to have had some experience with some of the things listed above.
